Le terme a des racines arabes : « musafir »,« safar », qui signifie aussi « faim » et « celui ou celle qui part en expédition, qui va loin ». Et des racines persanes : « parvar » qui signifie « nourrir, élever, éduquer ». Misafirperver signifie donc « celui ou celle qui nourrit son invité·e ». La performance est constituée de deux parties : « la préparation » et « le repas ».
